In 1967, Ford Esclia was replaced by Ford Escort (1968-1975). The first-generation Escort was presented as a rear-wheel drive two- and four-door sedan and station wagon. As a driving force, Kent gasoline engines of 1.1 liters (39 and 45 hp) and 1.3 liters (from 52 to 72 hp) were used.

Several trim levels were offered: Standart, De Luxe and Super with Estate (2/4 doors, 4 seats) and Saloon (2/4 doors, 4 seats) options. There were many sports modifications (GT, Sport, Twin Cam, Mexico, 1300E, RS1600, RS2000), on which more powerful engines up to 2.0 l were installed.

Over the eight years of production, the Escort I has sold over a million cars. The key to this popularity was the participation of Escort in various races. In early 1975, the car was modernized.

The wolf in sheep's clothing - Ford Escort Twin Cam, introduced by the European Ford immediately after the debut of the base model, was intended for subsequent "conversion" into rally and ring cars. Wolf essence was provided by the filling from Lotus-Cortina MkII and, above all, the Lotus-Ford engine with a volume of 1558 cubic meters. see, which developed 110 hp in the base case and accelerating the Escort to 60 miles per hour in 9.9 seconds - for the late 1960s, very decent data. But time does not stand still - two years later, the well-deserved Lotus engine gave way to the Cosworth BDA with a volume of 1599 cubic meters. see and with a power of 120 hp The base Escort with the new engine became a second faster in acceleration to hundreds, and the reserve for modernization became more significant - in the extreme version, 240-280 horsepower was removed from two liters of working volume! The yard was the very beginning of the 1970s, and ordinary Escort was a popular subcompact. The 1599 cm ³ Ford Escort RS 1600 engine develops 122 horsepower, which allows the car to accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in 8.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 183 km / h.

Unlike the Ford Escort Twin Cam, which was produced exclusively in white since 1968 about 1971, the new modification, which received its own name Ford Escort RS1600, was available in several colors at once. The green color of the model in the photos was the noble-racing name Le Mans Green - this color is still used for the RS version of the democratic Ford Focus, and in the rally Ford color you can find interspersed with this shade.

Most of the Ford Escort RS1600s that were released were used for their primary purpose - they were converted into military vehicles and honestly worked their way on rally tracks. Of the 1108 copies released, only a small fraction was used by amateur extremals as a vehicle for every day, and the surviving original RS1600s are rather highly valued in the classic car market.
