Mod 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic for Car Mechanic Simulator 2018

In 1952, FIAT impressed visitors to the Geneva Motor Show with its new design, created specifically for racing. Designed to compete in the Italian two-liter car championship, the legendary Fiat 8V or "Otto Vu" in Italian had a very advanced design, for its time, independent suspension of all wheels, powered by a 2.0-liter eight-cylinder V-engine and entered into confrontation with such famous athletes as Maserati, Ferrari and Lancia. Unlike their rivals, who had other types of engines, V12 on Ferrari, V6 on Lanche and in-line six on Maserati, the Fiat 8V engine was two four-cylinder units mounted on a common crankcase. The camber angle was 70 degrees. Power was supplied through two Weber carburetors, providing the engine with 105 horsepower. On sports, forced versions there were three of these carburetors, and the power of their engines reached 115 hp.

At the beginning of the body for the Fiat 8V, only the specialized department of the concern, Carozzeria Speciale FIAT, built. Gradually, almost all Italian body studios built their versions of this coupe. Of 114 Fiat 8V cars, the production of which lasted only two years, from 1952 to 1954, the most curious and beautiful, in my opinion, is the FIAT 8V version from Carozzeria Ghia. The car was called Supersonic (supersonic) and in the design of the body fashionable in the fifties aerospace motifs were played out. Car designer Giovanni Savonuzzi very skillfully beat analogs with supersonic airplanes, avoiding excessive pretentiousness and kitsch. Only eight cars were built in such a body.

The Supersonic body design first appeared on the Alfa Romeo 1900 Conrero which in 1953 participated in the Mille Miglia. Racer Virgilio Conrero. turned to his friend Savonuzzi, who had just been appointed head of design at Carrozzeria Ghia. Savonuzzi came up with the now-famous Supersonic forms, which still look spectacular. Unfortunately, the life of the futuristic Conrero-Alfa was interrupted when it crashed badly during the race and could not be repaired. It was the first supersonic designed by Savonuzzi and built by Ghia. The car was under the Alfa brand, although it used the front axle of the 1400 Fiat and the rear axle of the Lancia Aurelia. The only reconfigured engine was from the 1900 Alfa.

Although the car made only two brief public appearances in Turin (at the motor show) and Brescia (at the beginning of Mille Miglia), the interest in the new design was such that Ghia plans to make the Supersonics limited edition on the existing chassis and Fiat was chosen as a partner. The fact that Fiat just introduced the exciting 2-liter Otto Vu probably influenced its choice.

Big car companies in the USA were the main target for the young Italian coachbuilder. Since 1950, relations between the two companies Ghia and Chrysler have flourished. In 1953, engineer Luigi Segre traveled to Detroit to meet with Chrysler management. He presented Virgel Exner with photographs of Savonuzzi's latest work and told him of his plans to produce limited-edition cars that would put this fabulous body on the Fiat 8V chassis. According to reports, Exner was impressed with the prospect.

In addition, the meeting was attended by a gentleman named Paul Farago, a designer and engineer who was very active in modeling Chrysler models, and later in the development of Dual-Ghia cars. Despite acting independently, Mr. Farago was a friend and adviser to Virgil Exner, working closely with Luigi Segre as a liaison between Ghia and Detroit automakers. When Mr. Farago first learned about the proposal, he also agreed that the “marriage” of this futuristic body with the new Fiat chassis would be ideal. He became the customer of the first car.

The Fiat 8V Ghia Supersonic Coupe was first shown to the public in Paris in October 1953, where reporters were once again impressed by its appearance and called it the most beautiful car of the exhibition, the 'la plus bella voiture du salon'. Just imagine this car on the streets in 1953: a low waist, a long hood, an extremely low roof over a compact cab and reminiscent of a jet engine nozzle, the rear lights of a car. It should also be noted sharp "arrows", which begins above the front wheels and ends in the rear. The extravagant style, of course, was the result of a craze in the 50s the theme of supersonic aircraft, but unlike many of the "jet" projects of the Americans, Savonuzzi very carefully used analogies. Futuristic dashboard is a worthy addition to the body. The Ghia Supersonic Coupe had pretty impressive results for its time: 0-60 mph in 10.5 seconds, top speed 207 km / h. . Despite the radical and unusual features of the figure, the result was quite balanced and, undoubtedly, elegant. Even standing still
